Cape Conrad
Cape Conrad Coastal Park is some 450 km east of Melbourne (approximately 35km
SE of Orbost). It stretches from Point Ricardo to Sydenham Inlet where it joins
Croajingolong National Park, which stretches through to the NSW border.
Banksia Bluff Campground can be reached via the Princes Highway turning south
at Cabbage Tree Creek or turning off at Orbost and continuing west through
Marlo. There are a large number of sites suitable for all sorts of vehicles.
There is water on tap, flush Loos, and in campsites 1-29 a shower system that
you can add your own hot water into. Most sites have the metal fire/BBQ, but
bring your own firewood.
The major drawback to this wonderful area is that
camping fees of $13.90 per night (no power) apply and in peak holiday periods
$17.00 per night, plus bookings are required.
Similarly camp areas in Croajingolong NP, such as Thurra River and Wingan
Inlet with less facilities there is a fee of $13.50 per night "off
peak", and around the $17.00 per night "peak".
Attractions.
- Fishing, Swimming, Boating/Canoeing, Hiking, Bird watching, and 4WDing are
the main attractions
- Numerous walking trails from 1 to 25 km through various coastal
ecosystems, which range from sand dunes to heath lands. The walk around the
East Cape Boardwalk is an absolute must.
- Drive towards Marlo to view the Mouth of the Snowy River, and the walk down to
French's Narrows is well worth the effort.
- The Yeerung River gorge and estuary have a rich diversity of flora and
fauna and hours can be spent watching the abundant birdlife.
- Drive via the old coast road to the nearby fishing village of Bem River is
easy. From here the drive to Pearl Point is a well worth it for the
spectacular ocean views and we were fortunate enough to watch a Sea Eagle soaring
above the Point.
- For diversity there is the easy drive up north to the Errinundra National Park
for a walk through the magnificent forest.
- The drive through Croajingolong National Park from Cann River to
Mallacoota, which is in many 4WD books, is easy in the dry. You travel
through rainforest, woodlands, heathlands with some magnificant views of the
ocean and inlets.
